Vineland 141
Hammonton 39
VINELAND - Not much can be said about the Vineland High School boys swim team's home opener against Hammonton except, "It's about time."
After a heartbreaking controversial 96.5-86.5 loss to division foe Egg Harbor Township and a bad 114-72 loss Atlantic City to open the season, the Fighting Clan rebounded with a dominating 141-39 win over Hammonton in the team's first home meet of the 2007-2008 season.
The coaching staff was forced to jostle the lineup to make up for the absence of seniors Ryan Humphries and "New" Anusontarangkul, two of the team's top scorers, who were both out sick, but the team came through with some solid swims to pull out the victory.
Senior Andrew Radcliffe and sophomores Bryan Masilotti and Jerry Capriotti led the way for the Fighting Clan, each collecting two individual and two relay victories. Radcliffe, competing in the 200 freestyle for the first time this season, won the event in 2:13.74, the team's top performance of the season. He later won the 400 free in 4:54.03.
Masilotti took home top honors in odd events for him, the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, while Capriotti won the 50 free (26.53) and 100 fly (1:10.50).
The 200 Medley Relay team of Chris Stenger, Justin Reimels, Capriotti and Masilotti opened up the meet with a win in 2:06.04. Radcliffe, junior Mike Oliva and Reimels then collected one of several Vineland 1-2-3 sweeps on the night in the 200 freestyle. Masilotti and Mike Smith went 1-2 in the 200 IM and Troy Cervini rallied late to overtake Hammonton's 'A' swimmer for second place in the 50.
Vineland also got solid showings from divers Steve Fixler and Anthony Costanzo, and the Fighting Clan's other individual winners were Oliva in the 100 free and Reimels in the 100 breast.
The Fighting Clan will now focus solely on training as the enter the most gruling part of the season. They don't swim another meet until January 9 when they host Absegami.
