VINELAND - Nobody doubted that the Vineland High School boys swim team had a disappointing start to the 2007-2008 season.
Though the team swam well, they still dropped two of their first three meets before heading into Christmas break.
The team's hard work during that break showed, however, as the Fighting Clan blew visiting Absegami out of the water 136-48 Wednesday night at the Vineland High School Natatorium.
Vineland (2-2) gave by far its most impressive overall performance of the season, racking up 3,126 power points, more than 300 better than its previous best of the season.
The Fighting Clan got things going right away. Sophomore Bryan Masilotti led off the 200 medley relay in 29.19, more than four seconds better than the team's previous best, and Justin Reimels, Jerry Capriotti and Troy Cervini brought the relay home in a time of 2:01.35. The 'B' relay of Suparerk Anusontarangkul, Alex Farrell, Harry Longini and Jonathan Clifford took third in 2:10.76 to give Vineland a 10-4 lead.
Junior Chris Stenger kept things going for the Fighting Clan, leading a 1-3-4 finish for Vineland with a time of 2:12.91. Mike Smith took third in his season-best time (2:15.95) and senior Ryan Humphries shaved six seconds off his personal best in the event (2:16.50).
After Andrew Radcliffe, Anusontarangkul and Farrell swept the 200 IM, Mike Oliva (25.65), Capriotti (26.08) and Cervini (29.18) swept the 50 free to give the Fighting Clan a 45-17 lead heading into the intermission.
Capriotti (1:07.55) and Humprhies (1:08.17) each accomplished personal bests in the 100 fly en route to a 1-2 finish before Oliva dominated the field en route to a win in the 100 freestyle in his personal best 56.38.
Vineland took first and second in the remaining four events, including Masilotti's individual wins in the 400 free (4:46.38) and 100 back (1:09.50) and Reimels' win in the 100 breast (1:22.00).
The Fighting Clan will see action again this Friday when they host Oakcrest at 6 p.m.
